Sneaker Economics: Invest in Collaborations

Numbers don’t lie. Going back over 10 years, sneaker collaborations between brands perform better than non-collaborations by a significant margin. 🤝

In this chart, the blue line represents the average sale price of sneakers released as a collaboration (from Travis Scott and Jordan to Yeezy and Adidas), and the yellow line represents sneakers released without collaboration with another brand (think Nike Dunk Low Panda). The disparity in average sale price makes sense since sneaker collabs typically have less availability and more hype. But as average sale price drops for the market as a whole and despite the spread narrowing between collabs and non-collabs, investing in a collab preserves liquidity and the likelihood of a significant resell price premium over retail. Slated to release December 9th, the DMP 11’s share characteristics with some of the more popular 11’s on the market including its versatile colorway and history of prior release. Crocs Pollex Clog by Salehe Bembury Horchata (207393-2DO) Crocs have been on fire lately (🔥) and I think that will only continue with negative sentiment impacting the Yeezy brand and similar silhouettes like the Foam Runner. I continue to find value in neutral colorways and like the liquidity these Crocs are indicating with strong trading volume. It’s one of the few pairs that have maintained value over the last 60 days, and it’s a buy. Natalya

Nike Kobe 8 Protro Halo (FJ9364-100) Prices are down very slightly over the last two months, but sales volume indicates strong and consistent demand. Kobe 8’s are a popular basketball silhouette, and the Halo is a neutral colorway that should command interest long after its release. Since Nike doesn’t typically re-release Kobe’s, demand should eventually overwhelm supply. With the Halo’s trading near their lowest since release, now is a good time to step in and buy. Natalya

Nike SB Dunk Low April Skateboards (FD2562-400) There’s been lots of pre-release sales activity for the April Skateboards SB’s, releasing November 13th. Early pairs on the resell market have seen steady sales volume and are fetching an average price premium of over $300 a pair. Nike collaborator April Skateboards features popular skateboarders who should have healthy interest from the skateboarding community, and the SB Dunk Low silhouette has performed well on the resell market all year.
